Milford Sound/Piopiotahi is in the north-west of Fiordland National Park. Kayaking puts you at water level beneath Mitre Peak, whose sheer walls rise 1,692 m straight from the fiord, according to DOC. You also pass waterfalls such as Lady Bowen and Stirling Falls.
Below the surface, the fiord's walls continue down to about 265 m. The Piopiotahi Marine Reserve, established in 1993, runs along the northern side of the sound.
Kayaking on Milford Sound is mostly done on guided trips. Rosco's Milford Kayaks has run trips here for more than 30 years, and offers a range of difficulties:
| Trip | Distance and time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Harrison Cove Quicky | About 1 hr paddling | Water taxi to Harrison Cove. Easy. |
| Milford Cruiser | 5 km, 1.5–2 hr paddling | Relaxed paddle with views of Lady Bowen Falls |
| Stirling Sunriser | 12 km, 3.5–4 hr paddling | Paddle to Stirling Falls from Deepwater Basin |
| Sunriser Classic | Full loop of the sound | Rosco's most popular trip, run in summer and winter |
| Morning Glory | Fast-paced expedition | Prior kayak experience is a must |
| Paddle n Walk | Paddle to Sandfly Point, then walk part of the Milford Track | Easiest paddle grade |
| Day Safari | Includes return transport from Te Anau | Moderate paddle |
Trip details are from Rosco's website. Check current options and times before you book.
Rosco's warns that afternoon trips are more prone to wind, waves and rough water than morning trips. Choose a morning departure if you'd prefer calmer water.
DOC says the marine reserve is home to seals, stingrays, octopus, crayfish, occasional bottlenose dolphins and more than 100 fish species. Most of these are seen by divers, so treat any sighting from a kayak as a bonus.
This is one of the wettest places in New Zealand, with up to 7 m of rain a year. Pack waterproof layers, whatever the forecast.
DOC says a large earthquake is extremely unlikely during your visit, but a landslide-triggered tsunami is a real risk in the fiord. If you feel a long or strong earthquake, or see or hear a landslide, move up and away from the water immediately. On a guided trip, follow your guide's instructions.
Walk the Milford Track, or stop for the Key Summit Track on the drive in.
