Overview

Tūroa is on the southern slopes of Mt Ruapehu, 17 km above the town of Ohakune. The mountain's volcanic landscape shapes the skiing, with wide open runs, natural half-pipes and off-trail terrain, and views across Tongariro National Park.

Tūroa is run by Pure Tūroa Limited under a Department of Conservation concession. Whakapapa, on the northern side of the mountain, is a separate business with its own passes.

That's the highest lifted point of the seven ski areas in our guides. The Mt Ruapehu website describes Tūroa as having New Zealand's highest lifted point and biggest vertical.

Who it suits

  • Beginners: first-timer packages combine lift access, a lesson and rental gear in one booking.
  • Intermediates: more than half the terrain is intermediate, so it's a good mountain for building confidence.
  • Advanced: off-trail terrain and the full 722 m vertical.
  • Non-skiers: sledding and sightseeing.
