History of Westland Anniversary Day

Westland Anniversary Day marks the founding of Westland province, one of New Zealand's most dramatic and wild regions. The West Coast (as it's commonly known) was put on the map by the gold rushes of the 1860s, particularly at Hokitika and Greymouth. The region is characterised by rainforest, glaciers, and a rugged, pioneering spirit.

How Westland Anniversary Day Is Observed

Westland Anniversary Day falls on a Monday in late November or early December. The West Coast's major attractions — Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, and the Paparoa National Park — are accessible via State Highway 6 along the coast. The Haast Pass connects the West Coast to Wānaka and Queenstown.

Region Covered

Westland Anniversary Day applies to workers in the following areas: Greymouth, Hokitika, Westport. If you live or work in this region, you are generally entitled to a paid day off on this date, or equivalent time-and-a-half pay if required to work.

Employment Entitlements

Regional anniversary days are public holidays for employees who live and work in the relevant region. Under the Holidays Act 2003:

  • If the anniversary day falls on a day you would otherwise work, you are entitled to a paid day off.
  • If you work on the anniversary day, you must receive at least time and a half pay, plus an alternative holiday (day in lieu).
  • Whether the regional anniversary applies to a specific business may depend on the relevant industry and employment agreements.
