History of Wellington Anniversary Day

Wellington Anniversary Day celebrates the founding of the Wellington province. Wellington was established by the New Zealand Company in 1840, and its selection as the national capital in 1865 (over Auckland) was driven by its central location between the North and South Islands. The city's magnificent harbour and position at Cook Strait made it a natural meeting point for the nation.

How Wellington Anniversary Day Is Observed

Wellington Anniversary Weekend is celebrated with events across the greater Wellington region. The flat-water harbour attracts sailing events, while the nearby Remutaka and Tararua ranges draw trampers. Wellington's vibrant café culture means the long weekend is also popular for restaurant dining and cultural events.

Region Covered

Wellington Anniversary Day applies to workers in the following areas: Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, Kāpiti Coast. If you live or work in this region, you are generally entitled to a paid day off on this date, or equivalent time-and-a-half pay if required to work.

Employment Entitlements

Regional anniversary days are public holidays for employees who live and work in the relevant region. Under the Holidays Act 2003:

  • If the anniversary day falls on a day you would otherwise work, you are entitled to a paid day off.
  • If you work on the anniversary day, you must receive at least time and a half pay, plus an alternative holiday (day in lieu).
  • Whether the regional anniversary applies to a specific business may depend on the relevant industry and employment agreements.
