History of Marlborough Anniversary Day

Marlborough Anniversary Day celebrates the founding of Marlborough province. Marlborough was separated from Nelson province in 1859, with Blenheim established as the main centre. The region's warm, dry climate proved perfect for viticulture, and today Marlborough is New Zealand's most famous wine region — responsible for the Sauvignon Blanc style that put New Zealand wine on the world map.

How Marlborough Anniversary Day Is Observed

Marlborough Anniversary Day is observed on a Monday in early November. The Marlborough Wine & Food Festival, held in February, is New Zealand's premier wine event. The Marlborough Sounds, accessible by boat and walking track, offer extraordinary scenery year-round. The Queen Charlotte Track is one of New Zealand's great multi-day walks.

Region Covered

Marlborough Anniversary Day applies to workers in the following areas: Blenheim, Picton, Renwick. If you live or work in this region, you are generally entitled to a paid day off on this date, or equivalent time-and-a-half pay if required to work.

Employment Entitlements

Regional anniversary days are public holidays for employees who live and work in the relevant region. Under the Holidays Act 2003:

  • If the anniversary day falls on a day you would otherwise work, you are entitled to a paid day off.
  • If you work on the anniversary day, you must receive at least time and a half pay, plus an alternative holiday (day in lieu).
  • Whether the regional anniversary applies to a specific business may depend on the relevant industry and employment agreements.
