History of Chatham Islands Anniversary Day

Chatham Islands Anniversary Day celebrates the unique history of the Chatham Islands, located about 800km east of the South Island. The islands were settled by Moriori people, who developed a distinctive Pacific culture of peace. European settlers arrived in the 1790s. The islands have a remarkable history and are home to the Moriori revival — the resurgence of Moriori culture, language, and identity.

How Chatham Islands Anniversary Day Is Observed

Chatham Islands Anniversary Day is observed on a Monday in late November. The Chatham Islands are New Zealand's easternmost territory and among the first places in the world to see each new day. The islands offer exceptional wildlife experiences: black robins (once the world's rarest bird), Chatham Island petrels, and other endemic species.

Region Covered

Chatham Islands Anniversary Day applies to workers in the following areas: Waitangi (Chathams), Te One. If you live or work in this region, you are generally entitled to a paid day off on this date, or equivalent time-and-a-half pay if required to work.
