On 6 February 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands. The Treaty was an agreement between the British Crown and over 500 Māori chiefs. It established British law in New Zealand while guaranteeing Māori rights over their lands and possessions. Waitangi Day became a national public holiday in 1974.
